Scraptastic Tuesday - March link up

I've been doing non scrappy things recently, so I quickly had to think what I could get started on to prove my scrappiness this month.

I have a background to make for a silly scrappy project, nick named Triffid - you might be able to see why....

It could be another quilt for Siblings Together as long as it will not scare a child!? 

Another reason to make a background from scraps is because my neutrals scrap box seems to be constantly overflowing onto the floor.   So it was obviously time to get busy with my rotary cutter and low volume scraps.

This is the result so far

Will it do as background for my silly Triffid!   What do you think?

Scrappy Tile Blocks for Siblings Together

I have been working on another Quilt-As-You-Go quilt for Siblings Together!  

In true Blue Peter fashion here is one I made earlier with blocks from my fabulous Siblings Together Bee mates.

The block I made has the Dala horse on it of course!

These are easy blocks to make and now that I have completed two quilts this way I find that the quilts are very easy to put together, only requiring a bit of sashing and binding : much easier than layering, basting, quilting and then binding a quilt.

A Kaleidoscope for Siblings Together - updated !

Last Year Emma (aka Brian is the Messiah) was kind enough to donate a large pile of fabric for me to make quilts for Siblings Together.  I noticed that we had reached our target before I got around to making them, so thought I should make them for 2016!

One is already complete, made from 2wenty Thr3e Fabric by Eric and Julie Comstock for Moda.  The pattern I used is here on the Moda website - it's free!  

So recently I have been working on another version in Rob Bancroft microMod fabrics from Emma!  

This time I have been focusing on the circles you can make by fabric placement - I couldn't manage this without my design wall - and even with it I still managed to swap some bits around!  Oops!

Both quilts are made with this block, which you can find papers for here if you prefer foundation piecing.   I followed the Moda tutorial and used a Simpli-EZ 45° Triangle Ruler

I am always fascinated that fabric choices and placement can make such a difference - it is part of what keeps me making quilts!

Edited to add the final finish:

I quilted those tortuous loopy things in the circles - my brain finds it really tricky to start the loops going in the right direction but once I've worked it out each time it is easy

Then I quilted a simple squared off zigzag in those in between pieces

The backing was also sent by Emma - a gorgeous newsprint text fabric!

And I made a scrappy binding from the leftovers !

Cock-a-doodle done!

I have now finished the second Siblings Together quilt made with some lovely fabrics from Yvonne  - a Moda Farmyard charm pack and some Kona Banana.


I hope she approves!


I added some Kona Ruby Red, a bit more Banana and a crazy chooky fabric for the back.  


Since the last time I have posted about it, I have layered, basted and quilted it!

I had thought about quilting funny chickens on it or words about chickens but thought that might be too young for the age group so for the first time ever I have attempted stippling in a yellow Aurifil thread!  The centre has smaller stippling and I have scaled it up sightly for the border.

I did contemplate changing the colour of thread to a red to match the border but was bold and carried on with the yellow.  Slightly scary and not perfect by any means but I think the wiggly lines look like the worms the hens would so love to catch or they mimic the paths that they travel as the wander round the farmyard as these are definitely Free Range chickens!

Lastly I used the lovely red/white striped fabric from Yvonne for the binding!  Influenced by Red Pepper Quilts!

Two down and one to go!  Will I make it in time to take with me to the FQ Retreat in London - cue scary music - I do not know but if I don't I will have to send it in the post! 

Will it Cock-a-doodle-do??

I am intending to make three quilts for Siblings Together.  I have made one and have bought fabric for a second but not settled on the design yet!


Browsing the flickr threads I put my hand up for some cute fabric from Yvonne for a third quilt - but I was too late!  The lovely Yvonne (found here on Flickr and blogging here with Reene!) offered some other fabric if I wanted it!?


You guessed - I grabbed it and followed her advice on the pattern to use and here is the result so far!

A real chooky quilt top and back!  


The blocks were made using a Moda Farmyard charm pack and some banana yellow fabric strips from Yvonne.  Who'd have thought that chicken and banana went so well together!?  


Then I added some more Banana for a border, followed by some Ruby Red from my stash!  

I have some cooky chooky fabric for the back 

and Yvonne sent some stripes which I will use for the binding!

Just need some more wadding/batting - always seem to be running out - must mean I am getting quilts finished!  Heehee!
