ATS QAL or Across the Sea Quilt Along!

Jargon who likes it when we cannot understand what is going on but we quilters are very good at creating it!  Remind me every time I lapse into it without giving you a key to what it means!

Anyway if you read my post yesterday you will have seen this quilt in my mosaic of things acccomplished in September.

Thought you might like a closer look...

I made a scrappy binding and I like it !  I machine quilted this baby quilt - first time I've done that - and it is not as good as I would like.

I only have one bit like this - which I will attempt to do better....

But quite a few bits like this...

Wasn't the look I was going for exactly - more of a drunken sailor, than the smooth curves I was aiming for.

So I think that means I need to practice a bit more.  I see lots of placemats and mugrugs and such in my immediate future so I can improve this skill.  I only attempted wavy lines across the quilt but even that was a struggle - oh for a machine built into my table with a bigger throat!

I did manage a bit of better quilting round the whales in the bottom border - didn't have that rolled up quilt to contend with which seemed to have a mind of it's own!

Ah well - need to start somewhere and for me this is a work in progress skill - I will get better!

  1. This looks great, you wouldn't notice the bits you don't like if they're not pointed out, honest! Before I saw them I was thinking that the wavy quiltilng lines look great in the first picture. But my fav pic is it rolled up in a tree!

  3. Your quilt looks great! And I love that binding. Do you have a walking foot or dual feed on your machine? Makes the quilting process much easier. Jxo

  4. A finish is a finish SS and no matter how badly you think you have done it it doesn't matter. You have produced a beautiful quilt and you should be very proud of your achievement. Onward and upward to the next one and each one will get better. Well done.

  5. I love it! The whales, the blue background, the fact that it can climb trees - the whole package!

  6. Love the photo shoot...and a cute little wishing well! It was my first machine quilting too - hand quilting is so much easier for me but it is slooooow. Your quilt is lovely. Enjoy it!

  7. Have you ever considered leaving your quilt in 3 or 4 chunks, layering them separately, quilting them separately and joining at the end? It saves the hassle of struggling with a big piece under your machine and doesn't affect the finish. If you like I can give you a link to a handout I have on it.
And, don't point out the bits you are unhappy with, accentuate the positive (think that might be a song)

  9. Don't put yourself down - it looks great! It's a beautiful quilt with fab fabric, little adorable whales and beautiful binding. So, there are a few minor things to fix - details! You did a great job :)

  11. I am working on my first machine quilted quilt too. The ladies in my quilt guild say I'm either brave or crazy....I'm going with the second of the two but I am loving the process despite the craziness of it. I have a few puckers myself in the quilt (3 small ones and one rather large one that the binding will help hide). I love the whales....wonderful job!!

  12. OMG you have a well!!
Love the quilt and the wobbles are part of the fun. Get yourself spray basting that stops any little puckers!

  13. It looks lovely Nicky, I love your wavy lines and the quilting around the whales is fab! Don't look at the little bits that aren't perfect, I think we all have those in our quilts and once you are not concentrating on them because you are thinking about the process of the quilting, you quickly forget they are there and just enjoy the overall effect. I just love how you have interpreted the design, its fab! Oh, and I want your garden. A well, those trees? I'm green with envy!

  15. You have done a great job and as you said we have to start somewhere.
It's not that easy on a regular machine.
    Practise practise practise.

  16. Pish Posh...WHO would notice that? They are the tiniest little itsy bitsy bits I have ever seen on an otherwise gorgy quilt. Magnifying glass anyone? Allegedly 10 minutes of FMQ practice a day and in a month whoosh amazing. I'll let you know I haven't gotten there yet!!! Hahahahahaaa!!!
