Festival of Quilts Blogger style!

I have just been browsing through Amy's Bloggers Quilt Festival Fall 2011 and wow, all the quilts I have seen are stunning!  Some with great stories...

I then wondered what finished quilt could I enter and this favourite came to mind!

Here is it's story:

I had an idea to make two quilts out of similar material for the twin beds in my son's room.  I got some blue fabrics from Worn & Washed which recycles fabric from old shirts etc and added a few others.

It was going quite well and I made one quilt top from pinwheel blocks.  The other top was to be a bit more challenging -  a lone star with other stars round about it!  Here is where it went off the rails!  How did I make a quilt out of my lone star centrepiece - did I piece it or applique it!?  No answer came to mind at that point and the project was shelved....

Then this March I started blogging and decided to use my blog to finish all those UFOs that were hanging around getting started but never finished.  These 2 quilts were on my list!

After a lot of pondering I just appliqued that lonestar onto an old cotton sheet and the other smaller satellite stars too!  That was easily done!

By this time I was none to keen on the pinwheel version so decided to put it on the back of the quilt.  The fabrics are the same so of course they would marry up well!

Now how to quilt this one!?  I became inspired by all the lovely big quilting in cotton perle and decided that was the way forward!  I stitched around the applique stars and stitched some stars in the open spaces to represent those stars that are just faint lights in the sky that we almost but don't quite see! The label too was embroidered in cotton perle

This was an unloved, unfinished project sitting on the shelf - now this quilt is much loved and on my bed though I have to say it is a bit small for our bed but I just might be pushing my luck by giving my son a white quilt for his!

Hope you enjoyed the story and I am linking this quilt to Amy's Blogger's Quilt Festival.  It will be worth your while visiting so do go and see some gorgeous work....

    It's gorgeous!.
I use my 'smaller' quilts for my bed in summer when you don't need a quilt during the night. Just for show.

  10. Loved this story! Blogging does help you to be a bit accountable doesn't it? Unless you are like me and just don't post very often...I think I average once a month, but I like that I am keeping a record of the quilts that I work on so pretty much my blog is for my own record.

  18. So lovely to see this quilt again, Nicky. I think you were inspired with the small stars around it, and then the stitched stars as well. You have such a good eye for these things.
